Most USTA matches are scheduled on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays.  None of the facilities (except the new Jonesville public facility) will allow us to schedule evenings during the week as that is considered prime time for members and lessons.

There are three other city public court facilities, each with 4 hard courts, no court monitors.

If you do not know your rating, and you do not plan to join one of the local clubs, I would suggest you contact Mike Oransky or Robert Taylor at Westside Park.  Both of them are normally there late afternoon and early evening.  They will be able to help you determine your level of play so that we can connect you with a team at your level.

There are also numerous tennis teaching pros at the new Jonesville facility who could help you determine your level of play.  The center is open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., 7 days a week.

To determine your level of play, it would be useful to sign up for a clinic at Westside Park or Jonesville Tennis Center, and mention to the pro in charge that you are trying to determine your playing level.

  • Upcoming Senior USTA Leagues

The 2011 Senior and Super Senior Leagues begins in early January and runs through the first weekend in March on alternating weekend days. Christine Shurtleff will remain on board as co-LLC for Super Seniors and as a mentor to all of the remaining LLC’s.

When forming teams, remember the 75/25 rule, which means that 75% of your players must be at level while 25% may be one level lower.

  • Notes from the Women’s Day League

The Gainesville-Ocala Women’s Tennis League (GOWTL) is popularly known as the “Women’s Day League.”  It was formed to promote competitive women’s tennis in North Central Florida. Membership in USTA is not a requirement.

Divisions within this organization are based on NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) ratings at the following levels: 2.5; 3.0; 3.5; 4.0; and 4.5/5.0. Currently, teams at the 2.5 level have matches on Friday mornings, teams at the 3.0 level play on Wednesday mornings; those at the 3.5 level play on Thursday mornings; and the 4.0 and 4.5/5.0 levels play on Tuesday mornings.  The season runs from September to April or early May, depending on the number of teams at each level.

This year, there is a new Day League website, which allows online registration, score entry, etc. Go towww.gowtl.com for more information.

  • Florida Tennis League

The Florida Tennis League was created in 2010 by Newell Fox, John Hamilothoris and Gilles Maillart to fill a need in the North Central Florida area for competitive tennis where all players are guaranteed not only a fair match, but also a voice in league affairs.  “We wanted to make the players feel that they were part of the process” said founder Newell Fox. “We held a draft to create the teams. We expected to have 6 teams, but the response was so great we had to add a seventh just to accommodate the demand”.

To insure fair play we created rules and a format which encourages all players to perform at their very best each and every time they take to the court”.  Many of the areas’ finest players attended the draft in December, 2009, and over 65 players were placed on one of seven teams. Players came from as far as Jacksonville and Orlando for a chance to be drafted.  The FTL matches were held Saturday afternoons at DB Racquet Club and provided players and spectators alike with exciting, highly competitive tennis. The team, the Ball Busters, captained by Don Blair, finished in first place during the spring regular season play. After the regular season ended, the playoffs were held.

The draft for the FTL Summer Season was held in May, 2010. Players of all levels were encouraged to sign up, and both a “Major League” and “Minor League” were created.  Eighty-three men participated in the summer FTL season. Congratulations to the summer season winners.

    Regular season:

Major League team, co-champions: The Love Makers, captained by Brad Feussner, and the Money Ballers, captained by Skip Deist.

Minor league team, co-champions:  Ballz Deep, captained by Brook Waddell, and the Coolers, captained by Michael Aguirre.

    Major League Tournament of Champions:

Flight #1 Winners: Don Blair and Glen Marshall

Flight #2 Winners: Neal Anderson and Jon Vesely

Flight #3 Winners: Dwight Bailey and William Byrd

Overall Tournament Champions: The Ball Busters, captained Don Blair, by winning Flights 1 and 2.

The next draft, for the spring, 2011 season, will be held on Tuesday, January 11, 2011.
